The Group of Twenty (G-20) is a forum for international economic cooperation and discussion. Its members include the leaders of the world’s 20 largest economies (19 individual nations plus the European Union), and its members meet regularly to address pressing economic issues and find common ground on which to build lasting solutions. Since the Group of Seven didn’t include emerging markets in its membership, the G-20 was established in September 1999 in the wake of the Asian financial crisis as a forum to help coordinate responses to international economic crises.
Group of Twenty (G20) members include the European Union and the countries of Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, China, France, Germany, India, Indonesia, Italy, Japan, Republic of Korea, Mexico, Russia, Saudi Arabia, South Africa, Turkey, United Kingdom, and the United States. More than 80% of global GDP, 75% of global trade, and 60% of the world’s population are produced by G20 members.

The United States’ initial efforts in 1998 to coordinate a global response to the Asian financial crisis resulted in meetings with a G-22, from which the G-20 first emerged. The G-22 included central bankers and finance ministers from the G-20 member nations (with the exception of Turkey and the EU) as well as Hong Kong, Malaysia, Poland, and Thailand. Meetings of the G-22 came to an end once the Asian financial crisis was resolved because it was an ad hoc group formed to address a particular crisis.
